Opened to the public in 1983 in Urayasu, in the bay of the Japanese capital, Tokyo Disney Resort is the first Disneyland Park to be built outside the United States. It is one of the most popular theme parks in the land of the Rising Sun along with The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter in Universal Studios Japan (Osaka) and J-World Tokyo (the latter is entirely dedicated to the world of manga).
Inspired by Disneyland Park (Anaheim) and Magic Kingdom Park (Orlando) in its design, the Tokyo Disney Resort is home to the only Disney Park in the world that is not owned by the Walt Disney Company (which nonetheless retains a say in the entertainment offering). The theme park is owned by the Japanese Oriental Land Company, which also owns the Disney hotels and the park’s shopping area. With a surface area of 470,000 m², this vast entertainment area has welcomed an average of 30 million visitors every year since 2010, which is much more than Disneyland Paris. The shows and parades of the Tokyo Disney Resort are the undisputed hallmark of the park. In 2019, to mark the release of Toy Story 4, the park organised numerous events based on the characters of Woody, Little Bo Peep and Buzz Lightyear. Further developments were planned from 2020 as part of the park’s large-scale expansion plan at an estimated cost of $664 million. These included an expansion of the Fantasyland area with the addition of new attractions: The Happy Ride with Baymax, based on the animated film Big Hero 6 and Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast based on the iconic feature eponymous film. Other new features include rides, restaurants, shops and a theatre (Fantasyland Forest Theatre) dedicated to Mickey’s Magical Music World.
Tokyo Disney Resort has managed to instil a real Japanese identity through its various attractions and specialised shops. It groups together two theme parks: Tokyo Disneyland and its few new attractions (Splash Mountain, Jungle Cruise, Toontown…) without forgetting Tokyo DisneySea. Completed in 2001, this marine theme park is considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Disney parks worldwide. An immersive flight simulator attraction (Soaring: Fantastic Flight) opened in July 2019 in the Mediterranean Harbour area of Tokyo DisneySea. By 2023, this park is also expected to undergo expansion to increase its size by around 20%.
- Attractions that are often different from other Disneyland Parks; the classic Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain, Star Tours: The Adventures Continue and Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters ride
- Tokyo DisneySea theme park, rich in different and exclusive worlds (easily accessible via the Disney Resort Line monorail)
- The grandeur of the parades and the sophisticated theming of the locations
- The originality and plurality of the shows, constantly renewed
- The shops and restaurants in the World Bazaar section
- The Ikspiari shopping area
- The large open spaces and cleanliness of the park
- The illuminations of Tokyo DisneySea
- Easy access from Tokyo by public transport (Maihama Station is at the entrance to the resort)
- Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the oldest attractions in all the Disney parks. It opened in 1967 in the pioneering Disneyland Park (Anaheim) and was later duplicated in the other Disney parks. This inaugural opening came only a few months after the death of Walter Elias Disney, the founder of the theme park. This attraction is therefore the last to receive the American creator's signature of the Disney universe. Given its popularity with the public, the Pirates of the Caribbean concept was exploited on the big screen with the production of five successful films since 2003 (Captain Jack Sparrow is played by Johnny Depp).
- In addition to the Cinderella Castle, common to all Disney parks, Tokyo Disneyland has another life-size castle completed in 2020 based on the animated film "Beauty and the Beast" (produced by Walt Disney Pictures in 1991).
- Tokyo DisneySea is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Disney parks in terms of the quality of its scenery and the diversity of its leisure activities. It is built around a volcanic island and includes seven themed areas that represent different maritime regions of the world. As the name suggests, the attractions and atmosphere of Tokyo DisneySea are based on tales and legends from the world of the sea or oceans.
- Ask for the free Fastpass system to reduce the long queues on certain attractions. Ideally, you should arrive at the opening time of the resort.
- The Tokyo Disney Resort’s mobile app offers a lot of useful and practical information (site map, real-time updated attraction wait times, Fastpass system...).
- If you are short of time, choose the attractions in the Tokyo DisneySea area. If possible, avoid visiting at weekends and during Japanese school holidays.
